2009 Annual Meeting

On Thursday, April 1, 2010 United Way recognized local volunteers, donors and business and community leaders and praised a caring community that in 2009, despite a tough economic climate, helped raise $5,805,277.

Executive Director, Brian Wachman said, “In 2009, United Way supported 54 programs (40 agencies) and eight initiatives that provide support in our community for children and those in crisis.”  The top ten community supporters included the State of Nebraska, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ameritas Life Insurance Corp., Pfizer Inc, Federal Government (Combined Federal Campaign), Union Bank & Trust Company, Allied Insurance, Nelnet, Inc. and FACTS/Nelnet Business Solutions, Assurity Life Insurance Company, and Lincoln Public Schools.

Honored for outstanding dedication to the mission of United Way through its leadership commitment, resources, and time spent to solve community issues, Ameritas Life Insurance Corp., received the 2009 President’s Award.  Ameritas is the first company to receive this prestigious award for the second time. Ameritas associates are involved with United Way in various degrees such as: being members of the Campaign Cabinet, Women in Philanthropy Steering Committee, Fund Distribution Allocation Teams, and also serving as President of the United Way Board of Directors.

2009 United Way Board President, Sue Wilkinson said, “Volunteers are the backbone of United Way. We could not manage without their giving spirit.” The 2009 Spirit of United Way Award was awarded to Barry Gourley, Family Service Association of Lincoln. This award recognizes an individual that demonstrates strong community involvement and support through United Way.  They not only provide human services to the community, but they are also an active partner working to solve critical problems facing the community.
