9th Annual United Way Women in Philanthropy Luncheon

The 9th annual United Way Women in Philanthropy luncheon was held Friday, August 28th at The Country Club of Lincoln. The luncheon is sponsored by Lincoln Benefit Life.

Dr. Joan Giesecke, Dean of Libraries, University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Chair of the United Way’s 2009 Women in Philanthropy Steering Committee welcomed 140 women leaders to the event. Sheila Odom, Russwood Driving Solutions, 2009 Campaign Leadership Chair and Vice Chair Women in Philanthropy presented the 2008 awards.

In 2008, 614 Women in Philanthropy donors raised $623,887. Of this amount $371,682 was raised at the Women “Leaders” in Philanthropy level ($1,000 and above) by 205 women. At the Women in Philanthropy level ($500-$999) 409 women raised $252,205.

Companies with the largest number of Women in Philanthropy leadership donors in 2008 were recognized for their outstanding number of donors. Sue Wilkinson, Vice President, Planning and Risk Management for Ameritas Life Insurance Corp accepted the award for 79 Leadership Givers. Dr. M. Colleen Jones, faculty member, College of Business and Finance, University of Nebraska-Lincoln accepted the award for 72 Leadership Givers and Susan Hoover, Team Leader FACTS/Nelnet Business Solutions accepted an award for 41 Leadership Givers Nelnet Inc. and FACTS/Nelnet Business Solutions.

Awards were also given to three companies with the largest number of new Women in Philanthropy donors in 2008. Sue Wilkinson, Vice President, Planning and Risk Management for Ameritas Life Insurance Corp. accepted the award for 11 new Leadership Givers. Linda Robinson Rutz, Union Agency and founding member of the United Way Women in Philanthropy accepted on behalf of Union Bank & Trust Company with nine new Leadership givers. Dr. Joan Giesecke, Dean of Libraries, University of Nebraska–Lincoln accepted on behalf of University of Nebraska–Lincoln with five new Leadership givers.

E. Susan Gourley, Ph.D., Superintendent, Lincoln Public Schools, addressed the women on the importance of women and their roll in the community.

Lona Thompson United Way Resource Manager, Leadership Giving/Women in Philanthropy ended the program with thanking the Women’s Steering Committee and Staff and updating what has been accomplished in the past year. Members were encouraged to view the new web site, sign up for Facebook and electronic newsletters.

The Fall Networking will be held Thursday, October 29, 5:00-6:30 PM at Campbell’s Nursery. The Third Annual “Helping Hands Auction” will be held on Thursday. February 4, 2010 at The Country Club of Lincoln.
